WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE?
Child Abuse is the maltreatment or neglect of a child.
When a child is not loved, uncherished, or unaccepted, we say it is an abuse.
It is also an act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results to harm, the potential for harm, or threat to harm a child.
WHERE CAN CHILD ABUSE OCCUR?
Child Abuse can occur in a child’s home, schools, in the organizations or communities in which the child interacts with.
TYPES OF CHILD ABUSE
The types can be categorized into the following;
1. PHYSICAL ABUSE
This is the abuse that involves physical aggression directed at a child by an adult.
Adult deliberately inflicts serious injuries on a child.
These actions placed on the child lead to death.
2. PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE
This abuse is the production of psychological and social deficits in the growth of a child.
It leads as a result of behavior such as harsh criticism, loud yelling, rude attitude, inattention, and denigration of the child’s personality.
Name-calling, humiliation, destruction of personal belongings, excessive critic, the killing of a pet are other examples of psychological abuse.
In other words, Psychological abuse is also known as emotional abuse.
It can result in abnormal or disrupted attachment development.
It gives a tendency for the victims to put blame on themselves for the abuse, learned helplessness, and overly passive behavior.
At the end of it all, victims of this abuse may react by distancing themselves from the abuser or fighting back by insulting the abuser.
3. ECONOMIC ABUSE
It is also referred to as Neglect.
And what is this Child Neglect?
Child neglect is the failure of a parent or other person with responsibility for the child to provide the needed food, clothing, shelter, medical care that the child’s health, safety, and wellness are threatened with harm.
Also, neglect is a lack of attention from the people that surrounds a child and the non-provision of the relevant and adequate necessaries for the child’s survival, which would be a lacking of attention, love, and care.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT SHOWS THAT A CHILD IS NEGLECTED?
When a child is been neglected, there are different signals that we see in them.
I will be listing out some common signs as follows;
Inadequate medical and dental care.
Lack of sufficient clothing for the weather.
Frequently absent from school.
Begging or stealing of money and food.
Consistently dirty or looking unkempt.
4. SEXUAL ABUSE
This is the most rampant and commonest abuse practiced daily.
It is a worldwide abuse that people get up to hear almost every day.
What is Sexual Abuse?
Sexual abuse is the participation of a child in a sexual act aimed towards the physical gratification or the financial profit of the person committing the act.
What is Child Sexual Abuse?
It is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation.
Forms of Child Sexual Abuse
The various forms of Child Abuse are;
Using a child to produce child pornography
Pressuring a child to engage in sexual activities
Indecent exposure of the genitals to a child
Displaying pornography to a child
Physical contact with the child’s genital
Viewing of the child’s genitalia without physical contact
HOW TO STOP A CHILD ABUSE?
We can look into the following ways of how we can prevent child abuse in the community/society today.
By building support programs that support families. Both governmental and non-governmental organizations should build this program to impart skills to parents on how to care for and teach their children.
Counselors/Teachers in schools must help to educate their students, give motivation and advice if students have a problem.
By organizing prevention campaign
The governmental and non-governmental agencies must organize more child abuse prevention campaigns to help parents or people escape from abuse and also educate the public to love children.
Electronic and print media must advertise about child abuse and its causes, the effects, or the signs if the child is being abused and give tips on how to solve this problem.
